Welcome to RUF at Rice University! We are a student organization that seeks to share the light and life of Jesus with the larger campus community. This is a place for any student, regardless of background, belief, or lifestyle to come and consider the claims of the Bible within a diverse community of people.
Juan Carlos likes to say he is Mexican by birth and blood, American by citizenship, and a Texan by the grace of God. He moved to Houston in 1996 to attend Rice University, where he attained bachelors and masters degrees in electrical engineering. After working in the semiconductor industry for nine years, sensing a call to ministry, he decided to attend Westminster Seminary in Philadelphia, where he attained a Masters of Divinity in 2012. After graduating seminary, Juan Carlos accepted a call as an assistant pastor at Christ the King Presbyterian Church in Houston. In 2015, Juan Carlos was called to serve as RUF Campus Minister at Rice University, his alma mater.
In 2004, Juan Carlos married his high school sweetheart, Samara. Juan Carlos and Samara are incredibly blessed to have three children: Santiago Daniel (b. 2008), Karenina Valeska (b. 2011), and Juan Andres (b. 2016).
Breanna Perez is a Mexican-American who was born and raised in Houston, Texas. Her parents are Eugene and Oneida Perez, and she has a brother named Nicholas and a dog named Splash (who closely resembles a loaf of bread). She attended Rice University for her undergraduate career, earning a degree in English and Business. After graduating from Rice, she felt called to pursue ministry through the campus ministry she’d come to know and love throughout her college career and was soon employed by RUF to do two years of ministry at her alma mater as the Rice RUF intern. Some of Breanna’s hobbies include thrifting with her mom, watching Dallas Cowboys football with her dad, drawing, sewing, dancing, and watching shows/movies on Netflix. She also unashamedly enjoys nerd culture and has an affinity for all things Star Wars.
