Meet Our Team

Joe Johnson

Joe Johnson

Campus Minister

Joe grew up in Mississippi and Georgia, but somehow ended up graduating from the University of South Carolina. He interned with RUF at Auburn University where he met and married April. After seminary in Jackson, MS, he was the RUF Campus Minister at Birmingham-Southern College. In 2020, April and Joe, along with their children (Anna and Sam), moved back to the state of Mississippi to work with RUF at MSU.

April Johnson

April Johnson

Campus Staff

April is from Birmingham, Alabama. She graduated from Auburn University. After one year in East Asia as an intern with CRU, she returned to Auburn to serve on staff with the College Ministry of First Baptist Church in Opelika. While spending copious amounts of time in coffee shops, she met and fell in love with the RUF intern, Joe Johnson. They married in 2013 and spent one more year as RUF interns before moving to Jackson, MS for Joe to attend seminary. While in Jackson, they welcomed their daughter, Anna. After seminary, Joe was called to be the RUF Campus Minister at Birmingham-Southern College and their son, Sam, was born later that year. In 2020, Joe, April, Anna, and Sam, moved back to the state of Mississippi to work with RUF at MSU.

Josh Anderson

Josh Anderson

Intern

Josh grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in Cognitive Science. Originally an overworked Chemistry major, his time at RUF sparked a newfound love for Christian community and inspired him to pursue a career in Christian counseling instead. Josh loves the outdoors, flip-flops, drinking obscene amounts of coffee, collecting and listening to old records and spontaneous day trips (especially hour-long drives to Cane's). He is super excited to move to Mississippi and meet all the students, eat some good Southern cooking and explore the South!

Lily Gerrell

Lily Gerrell

Intern

Lily grew up in Gainesville, Georgia, a passionate Bulldog fan dreaming of attending the University of Georgia. That dream came true and she spent those four years in Athens involved in RUF and growing in her understanding of the Lord. She spent her summers working at Ridge Haven Camp, which is where she first felt the desire to go into ministry after college. Lily graduated in 2022 with a degree in Hospitality and Food Industry Management. It is very fitting that she was placed at MSU where she can keep saying her favorite phrase, "Go Dawgs!" Lily loves charcuterie boards, country music, and college football. She swears crocs are the best shoes and will cry during 90% of the movies she watches. If you need someone for an afternoon walk, a tik tok, or game night, she's your gal. Lily is excited to serve as an intern at Mississippi State walking with students towards Jesus!

Jacob Hatfield

Jacob Hatfield

Intern

Jacob was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, and moved to Murfreesboro, Tennessee to pursue a degree in Aerospace. During the pandemic, he decided he was done waiting and got married to his high school sweetheart, Claire, after their sophomore year at Middle Tennessee State University. There, he got involved with RUF and deepened his understanding of the Gospel, God’s grace, and his provision. After growing and learning so much in his time with RUF, he decided to pursue the internship and work to give that experience to other college students. Jacob loves playing spikeball (or anything where he can be competitive), writing music, and spending time with da boyz. He is very excited to serve students and see what the Lord has planned!

Claire Hatfield

Claire Hatfield

Intern

Claire Hatfield was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. Because of her love for singing and children, she decided to pursue a degree in Music Education from Middle Tennessee State University. She married her high school sweetheart after her sophomore year at MTSU and can not wait to work alongside him in the internship. Claire loves musical theatre (especially Les Mis), line dancing, growing houseplants, and singing anything from opera to bluegrass. The Lord has used RUF to grow her in her love for others and for her Savior and she is so pumped to share that same joy with the students!
